Saturday's Rock!

Hi Bloggers!
I do apologize for being so late to post today but I was out of the house, yes me out of the house and with people, enjoying life's little moments. I had a great time talking with others and laughing a ton. Good times but now back to preparing for a busy November full of classes and a wedding that I am making place cards for.

So today's card is a Christmas card that I made a few days ago. I bought some kraft card bases from Hobby Lobby that were 1/2 off and I must say they are such a nice change to the white or off white. The tag is a sticker that I matted with green cardstock. The dark red patterned paper is old by Creative Memories and the other is from LSS. Flowers by LSS, OTC and Prima. The gold center was at the bottom of my rhinestone bin all lonely and kind of beat up. But I liked the way the gold looked with the eyelet on the tag.

Fabulous Friday Fun

This week I am going to share with you the way I color in a lot of my images here at IDIC. I simply paint the image using distressing inks and water with a regular paint brush I bought at Hobby Lobby. I have a craft mat that I pressed the distressing ink pads on and then spray them with water. You can find the Craft Sheet at the OWSE store. Another thing you can use if you just want to try it out is wax paper. It works well but after a while I decided it was time to invest in the craft sheet. It is well worth the money for this technique and so much more.

I use distressing inks because they react beautifully with water, where other ink brands do not. I often use water with Perfect Pearls in it to give the image sparkle. I printed out the digital image from Robyn's Fetish on regular cardstock from Michael's but I have to tell you I really like to use watercolor paper. I found some at Hobby Lobby that I felt was reasonably priced and only needed to be cut down slightly to fit in my printer. The cardstock can warp when you add the ink with water. This doesn't happen with the watercolor paper.

For this card I am using the following supplies:

1.) Distressing inks Barn Door and Broken China

2.) Perfect Pearls color perfect pearl

3.) Mini Mister (to blend my water and Perfect Pearls together)

4.) Mittens image from Robyn's Fetish

5.) cardstock, lace, thread and stamp from my stash

Let's begin!

After I printed my image out onto the cardstock I gathered all my supplies.

Take your ink pads and pat them onto the craft sheet to make your very own painting palate. In order to keep your ink pads from becoming contaminated with other colors set the different colors apart from each other. See below:

If you plan on combining inks to make your own colors place them semi close to be able to pull more of one color to the other until you get the color you are looking for. The more water you add to the ink the lighter the color will be. I usually spray the water to the side of the ink spot so I have the choice to make it lighter or darker.

This next photo show my paint brush and the combining of the water (with Perfect Pearls) and ink together on the paint brush.

I then started painting in my image. I started with the smallest part of the image, the hearts, so that the red was prominent and would stick out from the blue mittens. After cleaning my brush with water, I went onto the blue. I colored the first coat light blue because I like to go over the image a second time with the same color after the painting dries a bit. The lines from the paint brush seem to blend together better the second time it is painted.

You can see in the photo below I have paint brush lines so I am going to wait a while before I go back in with my blue. So because I was being impatient I decided to blend the blue and red together and make a purple color for the top of the mittens as you can see below.

Here is my final image. I painted a second coat on the hands of the mittens but not around the cuffs. I wanted the lines to show on the cuffs and for the color to be lighter than the bottom.

Here is my final card. I wanted the lace to flare up when the card was standing up. What I will do is fold the lace upward when I put it into the envelope so when the recipient takes the card out of the envelope it will naturally flip up like the picture. You can really see the sparkle that the Perfect Pearls add to the image. Love that.

That's all I have for you today. I hope you have enjoyed a new twist to coloring in your images and using those distressing inks you may have in your stash.

Check out my BLOG for more examples of this technique, especially this fairy card.

October Calendar 2011 Fallin' for You M-nT

Every year for Christmas I make calendars for family members. I don't think I have posted these before since I had to crop and clean them up for this post. I use the same photos for every calendar but run out of the same supplies making each calendar a little bit different. The top layout is on our calendar and the bottom is one of the other 8 that I made last year. I think I like ours better but what do you think?

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look.

Sunflower Distressed Tag Card

This week at I Did it Creations we were sponsored by Hope Jacare and our challenge is to create a tag with a tree or flowers on it. I started by just creating the tag but then decided to make it into an anniversary card for my aunt and uncle. I used Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous stamps along with a couple of border stamps from TPC Studio.  Thanks for stopping by today.

Fabulous Friday Fun

Here we go into week two of Fabulous Friday Fun. Today I'm going to show you how I make a shaped card using Spellbinders dies. You can use any type of die and die cutting machine. This just happens to be what I have.

For this project I used minimal supplies:

1.) Three shades of cardstock

2.) Tim Holtz stamps (from Birds and Baubles and Soulful Journey)

3.) Distressing ink (Frayed Burlap)

4.) Colorbox petal point pigment ink

5.) Stampendous clear embossing powder

Tools that I used: distressing tool by Ranger Industries, Spellbinder die (Beaded Square), Cuttlebug machine, Fiskars 12 inch paper trimmer, Marvy heat embossing gun and an old school embossing stylus.

The first thing I do is figure out where to score my cardstock. I don't have a fancy dancy scorer so I use what I have on hand, which is my 12 inch trimmer. Where the blade cuts a straight line is a groove that when you line up your paper and push down into that groove with a stylus you score your paper.

With the piece of cream cardstock that I picked out of my stash, I lined it up on my trimmer and then placed the die on top of it. I know that I'll need a fold in the paper to make it a card and not just two die cuts. To make this fold I am going to score the paper to the right of the die. Therefore when my die is on my trimmer the score line is over the die. See picture below.

From here I take the die off of the trimmer, leaving the paper where it is, and score my line in the groove of the trimmer.

After it is scored I then take the paper out and fold it at the score line.

Once I have a well folded piece of cardstock I get the Cuttlebug out and place the die on top of the folded paper to cut my card. You have to let the die hang over the paper where it is folded like the picture below.

In order to get the die to cut through two pieces of cardstock I had to use a piece of chipboard and run it through twice. Since we are using the Cuttlebug to cut we use the "C" plate. ("C" is for cut)

Here is the die cut still inside the die. At first I was all mad because it didn't cut all the way through.

But then I took it out of the die and loved the results. On the inside of the card the pattern of the die was embossed onto it. I was pleasantly surprised.

This is the front of the card unfinished.

And here it is all pretty.

I added some stamps and heat embossing to the brown cardstock. I took a Colorbox petal and inked the edges so I could pour embossing powder over it and heat embossed the edges. Distressing ink was my friend on the edges of the card base along with some Perfect Pearls and water sprayed on it.

Thank you so much for stopping by today and checking out my tutorial.

Halloween tag

I made this tag at a class I taught on Saturday. I like making tags because you can set them aside and use them on layouts or cards or just start a tag collection. That would make a great Your Story book: a book of tags. It could serve as inspiration at a later date or to just marvel at the lovely tags you have made. hmmmm

Anyway, this is a Tim Holtz tag that I sprayed with water and Perfect Pearls. I then crumbled the tag up into a little ball and smoothed it out afterwards. Then I took the distressing ink pads Red Barn and Wild Honey and rubbed them over the tag. I used lighter colors so the black would really stand out. After that I used an Inkadinkado leaf flourish stamp with Colorbox black ink and stamped the side so a little of the image went off the edge. The Trick or Treat stamp is a friend of mine and she doesn't keep them in the package-so Idk who makes that stamp. Then I took some Pearl X and dipped my finger in and smeared it along the edges. After it dried I placed the ribbon (Fancy Pants) through the top and the epoxy stickers in the left lower corner. The striped, Oct and 31 stickers are by Making Memories.

Thanks for taking a look at my Halloween tag

Manly Monday

Some days there just aren't enough hours to get through everything. My Sunday list had one thing crossed off of it. It's a little discouraging. But hopefully I can catch up on things this week.

But onto Manly Monday: This weekend I was blessed by my favorite scrappy friend with some Jolee's stickers and with one of the packs I made this card. I was a little concerned about receiving the hubby's approval on this one. He liked the card and approved it for my post. (I think mostly because he owns a Jeep)

I used:
new to me Basic Grey patterned paper (Lauderdale)
Fiskars vellum
Spellbinders die cut label #4
Cuttlebug embossing folder (Diamond plate)
Cuttlebug machine
cardstock by Creative Memories (green) with yellow and white unknown
stamp by Tim Holtz for Stampers Anonymous
ink by CTMH (Topiary)
Jeep sticker by Jolee's

I'm entering this card:
Stamptacular Sunday(SU#134)-Anything goes
Sweet Stampin(SA)-For men

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my creation.

I Did it Creations Challenge

This week at I Did it Creations our challenge is animals and we are sponsored by Robyn's Fetish. I have chosen a reindeer for a Christmas card because you know it's right around the corner. I colored him in with distressing inks and Perfect Pearls by Ranger Industries. That is my go to technique lately. I bought watercolor paper from Hobby Lobby and it provides a beautiful painting every time. The paper doesn't warp and the coverage is so much better then regular cardstock.

I used:
Spellbinders dies for the scalloped edge die cuts
a Cuttlebug embossing folder
stamp by Elle's Studio
ink by Stampin' Up
felt ribbon by OTC
brads by Eyelet Outlet and Recollections
Ranger distressing inks
tag by Making Memories

Thanks for stopping by. I will see you tomorrow with a Manly Monday card that I need to get to work on, in the morning bcuz it's way passed my bedtime right now and after teaching a class for 6 hours I'm whipped. God bless and have a great Sunday:)

Fabulous Friday Fun-Dry Embossing with ink tutorial

Hi everyone!

Welcome to my first post of Fabulous Friday Fun where I will be demonstrating techniques, giving product reviews, and just showing you some of the tips I've learned throughout my time as a paper crafter.

Let's start off with a very brief introduction. My name is Cindy and I reside in Western Michigan. I'm married to my best buddy and together we have a very big spoiled dog. I started as a scrapbooker and then went into making cards about 5 years ago. I still scrapbook but enjoy the process of making cards a little bit more, for now.

I have taken classes from Tim Holtz, Melissa Frances, Suzanne J. Dean, and different manufacturers in the paper crafting industry. I recently started teaching card classes at a local scrapbook store and really enjoy sharing my time and knowledge with others.

If you would like to follow my blog at cre8ivecindy.blogspot.com you will see a new creation every day. I'd love it if you would follow me because I have a giveaway plan that I think would be fun for someone to win prizes. More to come on that.

Enough about me, let's get into today's fun technique. I love my Cuttlebug. So today we are going to learn about inking your embossing folder to create two different effects.
Here are the tools you will need:

1.   An embossing machine such as the Cuttlebug, Big Shot by Sizzix, Vagabond, Sizzix Texture Boutique, Grand Calibur by Spellbinders and there are more that I am missing, I'm sure.
I have the Cuttlebug so I will speak in Cuttlebug terms.

2.   A well-inked distressing ink pad.   We are using distressing inks because it dries a little bit slower than water-based dye ink pads and it comes off easily with soap and water.

3.   The embossing plates to your machine.  Cuttlebug users are using A, B and B.

4.   The embossing folder

5.   The size or shape of paper you want to use.  See the photo below.

There is a positive and negative side to most embossing folders. The positive side will be the side in which the design of the folder is concave and therefore, the design is raised once you run it through your machine.  See photo.

So we are going to ink this positive side first and then I will show you the negative side.

We need to ink our positive side with a well-inked distressing ink pad.

Press the pad lightly onto the embossing folder. The drier the pad, the harder you have to push down to get ink on the embossing folder, which can be cool if you are going for that kind of look. See the below photos:

Place the paper in between the embossing folder and run it through your embossing machine.

When you take the paper out of the embossing folder you have the background inked and the raised pattern is the color of your paper. You can see where I pushed too hard with the ink pad because there is ink on the raised pattern. Like this:

Here is the card I made using this technique:

Onto the next part:  On the negative side of the embossing folder, the design/pattern is raised up on the folder. This one is tricky. You need to get the ink on that raised part only. The fun part is if you don't achieve that perfection it gives a cool distressed look. Check out the photos below of the negative side of the embossing folder without and with ink:

Then run it through your embossing machine and you end up with an image like this:

Here is the card I made using this technique:

As you can tell I didn't get the technique perfect but inking the edges with a distressing tool made the cheesecloth background stamp look distressed.

I hope you enjoyed the first addition to Fabulous Friday Fun.
A couple of things to note are these:
I will be posting this on my personal blog on Friday's too.  Become a follower of my blog, use this technique and leave me a link in the comments before the next Fabulous Friday Fun and you can win a prize from me. I make you become a follower so I can get contact you if you win.
